In this article we explore the possibilities of promoting your business via the world's most popular electronic tool - e-mail. By making use of its signature capabilities you can quickly and easily promote your business services. You have full control over which aspect of your business to promote, when to promote it and best of all it's free.
As with any business it's essential that you keep up-to-date with what's happening within the industry and elsewhere. In my chosen industry of website marketing (also known as internet marketing or online marketing) rapid change is the order of the day as people come-up with new ways to do business via the electronic media.
There are 100s of ways to promote your business website on-line (and off-line). Here is a few of them: advertising banners, sponsorships, social networks (and there are dozens of these), pay-per-click advertising, blogs, wikis, e-mail, press and news releases, e-newsletters, article syndication, partnering, podcasts, videocasts, directories, search engines, direct mail, winning awards, really simple syndication (RSS), mobile marketing.
Indeed, everyday, wether it in the newspaper, on the radio, on TV, or any other communication medium, you are constantly being urged to 'visit our website'. Yet one of the simplest and cheapest forms of electronic promotion is often overlooked, or poorly executed. I'm referring to e-mail and the addition of a 'signature' at the bottom of all the e-mails you send. (Just think of how many thousands if not millions of e-mails your firm sends every year - a powerful business promotional tool going begging!)
Consider your e-mail signature as your electronic business card. At the least it should contain your contact details - name (and title), phone and fax numbers, e-mail address, name of the company, and possibly the firm's physical address. You should also include the business' website address. When doing so ensure that you include the full address, in other words the 'http://' portion. This will enable a person to click on the URL and be taken directly to the website.
This is a start, but I recommend that you include the firm's tag line to remind people of your line of work. But why stop here? Use your signature file to actively promote the business with a 'catch phrase' to draw people's attention to: your subscription e-newsletter, special, a new service, a particular article, the fact that you have won an award or are sponsoring an event. The possibilities are endless. And remember to include the full address of the relevant page on your website.
To make it obvious that the signature block is separate from the main portion of the e-mail, ensure the font size is smaller. Then add colour (and possibly the company's logo) to draw attention to the signature block and in particular, to the promotion line.
It takes very little time to create a signature within your e-mail software. But don't get carried away. The signature file is after all, only an adjunct to your e-mail message – it's not the focal point.
